unlock Ipad

Hi. I have a working Ipad but I cannot update it, otherwise it will block.
Can someone help me with this?

Some unlocked the iPad for me.
He removed the icloud block. He told me I "could never update it" otherwise it will block.
So I haven't updated it.
I would like to know it someone can help me with this.
The ipad is 100% working, the only thing it doesn't do (or I cannot do) is download upgrades. I am afraid i will block (I he told me)
